Description from the seller
Pair of antique British barrister wig and gown hangers – Brass & hardwood – ca. 1890-1920
An exceptional and rare, nearly identical pair of antique English clothes hangers for a barrister's wig and gown, dating from the late Victorian to Edwardian era (circa 1890-1920).
At the time, British and Irish lawyers used these specialized hangers to neatly store and present their traditional court attire. Thanks to the ingenious rotating design, the heavy silk or woollen gowns could hang freely in the often cramped courtroom robing rooms.
The central brass hook and frame also provided perfect space for the characteristic horsehair wig.
Each piece features a beautifully turned, drop-shaped handle of high-quality hardwood, ending elegantly in a classic finial.
The upper portion therefore consists of a swiveling, solid-brass hanger with two gracefully curved arms. These are finished with smooth, rounded knobs to prevent delicate fabrics from stretching or being damaged.
The brass frames remain firmly in place with their original, historic adjustment screws.
