This gilded-brass artillery clinometer or goniometer by C. Lewert was made in Berlin around 1850–1860 in an industrial design style.
Description from the seller
In its wooden case lined with original fabric, a very rare historical German artillery instrument—the Richtkreis or Winkelmesser—from the 19th century: Clinometer / goniometer for pointing by an artillery officer to measure firing angles with a gilded brass scale graduated 0–50 by 5, with a spirit level marked C. Lewert 269. The serial number (very low) 269 indicates early production of the Prussian workshop between 1850 and 1860. C. Lewert was then the official mechanic of the Royal Court of Prussia in Berlin.
The workshops of the C. Lewert factory produced precision instruments, compasses, mines, etc., from 1800 to 1860!
Finely engraved in old German text: "Der Nonius giebt Sechszehteile eines Grades an Dien Bogenlänge. Für 1 Grad ist 7/400 Radius."
Abbreviation F.L. 2066: F.L. designates Feldartillerie-Linie (field artillery of the line) or Feld Lazarett/Feld-Leicht (light field artillery columns used in military campaigns), with which this instrument saw Austro-Prussian battles (1866) or the Franco-Prussian War (1870). No. 2066 is the arm’s registration within the unit, stamped by the artillery officer responsible for materiel at its issue. The rarity of this complete C. Lewert object, with its adjustment screws, free of corrosion and perfectly functional, means it is often only found in museums dedicated to the Austro-Prussian and Franco-Prussian wars.
Complete and in very good condition. Needs revival.
