The work depicts the hooded figure with the face covered by the iconic screaming white mask, captured in a state of ominous stillness as it grips a red-stained blade with both hands in front of a petrified forest. The figure and the broad folds of the dark cloak emerge with a strong physical and three-dimensional presence from the stone-like material of the background, defining a perfect contrast between the fluid and dramatic forms of the drapery, the textures of the carved branches, and the finely worked surface of the marble.
