Description from the seller

Exceptional and rare ancient Russian Orthodox icon – The Assembly of the Three Holy Moniales (Saint Domna, Saint Pelagia, Saint Martha) under the gaze of Christ Pantocrator – Russian Empire, 19th century

Magnificent and relatively uncommon Russian Orthodox icon on a wooden panel, executed in tempera with warm pigment highlights and a luminous background. This type of representation, uniting three venerable holy women (prepodobnye) in full-length form, is especially sought after by collectors of monastic art.

The three monastic figures are depicted in a hieratic manner, robed in the strict habit of the Great Schema (skhimanokhini) finely adorned with crosses and bearing the attributes of continual prayer:

Saint Domna (С. прп. Дѡмна), on the left, depicting a gesture of intercession and prayer.

Saint Pelagia (С. прп. Пелагїа), at the center, hands joined holding the traditional prayer rope (chotki).

Saint Martha (С. прп. Марфа), on the right, in a pose of deep mystical contemplation.

In the upper part, piercing the celestial clouds bathed in golden rays, Christ Pantocrator appears to bless the saints while holding the cruciform globe, symbolizing His universal sovereignty.
