The diesel-electric four-axle bogie locomotives of series 2200 of the Dutch Railways NS formed, in the years of purchase 1955 to 1958, the era of the traction switch from steam to diesel locomotives. With the 2400 series, 280 units were put into service. With their single-cab driving cabs and the long front, they embodied an American design. The NS machines, however, were manufactured exclusively by Western European companies. The 100 km/h locomotives could be used not only for freight trains and shunting services, but were also used for passenger trains. For heavy ore trains, sometimes up to four locomotives were used in multiple traction of the 900 hp machines.
