Characterful earthenware decorative vase from the Netherlands, dating to c. 1900–1910 in the Art Nouveau/Jugenstil style, measuring 25 cm high and 14 cm wide with brown marbled glaze and blue‑green relief decoration, featuring the Dutch inscription “Eigen Haerd is goud waerd” on the front, and showing age-related wear including a glaze chip at the foot; possibly attributed to De Urn with potential involvement by Chris van der Hoef, not definitively confirmed.
Description from the seller
Characterful stoneware decorative vase, attributed to De Urn, with a possible design by Chris van der Hoef. Probably manufactured at the beginning of the twentieth century.
The vase has a long, elongated body, a wide neck, and two gracefully curved ears. The brown mottled glaze contrasts beautifully with the blue-green relief decoration.
On the front, the Dutch saying ‘Eigen Haerd is goud waerd’ is applied in ring technique. Liquid clay is applied to the surface, giving the letters and ornaments a palpable relief. Decorative dots, stylized motifs, and fine bands around the neck complete the design.
An appealing example of artisanal Dutch jewelry ware, in which form, color, and a traditional proverb come together.
Dimensions: height 25 cm, width 14 cm.
Condition: no restoration but with glaze chips at the base and visible age- and wear-related marks. See the detail photos for the condition; they are part of the description.
Brand and attribution: the marks on the underside are very unclear. The attribution to De Urn and the possible involvement of Chris van der Hoef are therefore not definitively confirmed.
Circa 1910, several ceramic designs by him, including brown-glazed vases, pots, and candlesticks, were produced under the name De Urn (often in line with his earlier work at Amstelhoek and later at Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland).
