Qur'an from Kashmir/North India, early 19th century, in Arabic, with 400 pages and a 16 by 10 cm size, original language manuscript on burnished paper with gold and red borders and illuminated end-pages, remains incomplete from Surah 1 to 7 but is sound from Surah 8 onward and bound in red leather boards with gilt medallions.
Description from the seller
A Qur'an, most likely of Kashmiri origin, C.1825. Surah 1-7 incomplete with loose pages, but sound from Chapter 8 onwards, including some impressive illuminated end-pages. Contains a Persian preface in free-hand invoking a deceased Shaykh al-Islam, points to an Indo-Persian origin. Arabic script on burnished paper, in black naskh with full vocalisation, within gold and red ruled borders, green tinted text bands and gilt verse roundels.
The closing double-page spread, for Surah Al-Falaq and An-Nas, is richly illuminated with gold ground arabesques of polychrome blossoms against deep blue panels. Gilt marginal medallions mark test divisions and diacritical marks in red guide the reader. A later owner's devotional inscription appears on the flyleaf. Red leather boards with gilt and blue mandorla medallions, one of which is loose prefacing the early Surahs.
This is a really interesting historical manuscript with much to commend it, despite its incompleteness and binding.
Please note that shipping costs are not solely the cost of the postal delivery service itself. Included within the shipping price is the work undertaken to research the article, to mount it, for photography, for uploading to Catawiki, for preparation and packaging the article securely and for transporting the article to the postal delivery agent for processing.
Also, please consider when bidding on this lot that this artwork is shipped from the UK. Import duties will now have to be paid by the recipient to the Postal Service when the parcel arrives in your country. This will likely vary between 5% and 20% of the sale price depending on your country's Import Rate, so please check this if you are concerned. This is a Tax collected on behalf of your Government and is not an additional fee charged by us.
New German customs regulations mean that we are now having to pay customs before the item leaves the UK. Regrettably we have to pass these costs on through a surcharge on postage to Germany. As we don't know the final auctions costs we have estimated the approximate value. If the custom costs more than we have anticipated, we will absorb the additional customs duty.
