Description from the seller
ESU 50010 - ECoSBoost, Booster 4A
Indispensable parts of any large model railroad are boosters (here called boosters): if the current draw of all your locomotives, including their functions, wagon lights and functional models, is greater than the power the control center can supply, you must split your layout into several blocks, each powered by its own booster. The ECoSBoost(er) is designed precisely for this task: it is perfectly tuned for use with our ESU ECoS or the Märklin control station. The ECoSBoost is available in two variants: the 4 A version is ideal for HO scale and smaller, while an 8 A version is suitable for the garden railway enthusiast. As with the ECoS, each booster is supplied with its own appropriate power supply.
Operation
The ECoSBoost is connected directly to the ECoSlink connector, from which it receives its control signals. In principle, it can amplify and send to the track the following data formats: DCC, Motorola, Selectrix and mfx. Which data format is used in a given case depends entirely on the command station being used and its capabilities. Thus, a booster connected to an ESU ECoS can process DCC, Motorola and Selectrix, while, when connected to a Märklin central station, it will amplify and send Motorola- or mfx-data signals to the track. Thanks to "Plug&Play" all ECoSBoosters are automatically included in a list of external ECoSlink components and can be centrally controlled and configured via the ECoS display.
Functions
ECoSBoost amplifies the data signals generated by the digital control station and delivers them to the designated output on the track. Depending on the model, 4 or 8 amperes continuous current are available. Depending on current draw, the 4 A version, designed for HO and smaller scales, can drive up to 10 locomotives. The ECoSBoost is powered by a supplied supply with a stabilized DC output. Each ECoSBoost is easily controlled and configured directly by the ECoS: for each booster you can individually set the maximum permissible output current. In addition, the display can be configured to show the current power consumption of each booster, so you know how much “reserve” you still have. A particularly handy feature is the ability to set each booster individually for deactivation in the event of a short circuit on the layout: for example, if you have connected your turnout decoders to a separate ECoSBoost, you can still reliably operate your turnouts in case of a short circuit.
Feedback
An ECoSBoost can do more than just power the rails: every ECoSBoost is factory-equipped with a feedback function (Global Detector) for bidirectional NMRA communication. This allows locomotives that support it to send information back to the ECoS as soon as the relevant DCC standard is activated. This is extremely useful for determining locomotive position on the layout or reading motor data. The ECoSBoost reads the data and sends it via the high-speed bus ECoSlink to the ECoS for further processing.
Märklin Central Station
In combination with a Märklin central station, the ECoSBoost provides a similar function: all mfx locomotives supported by an ECoSBoost behave exactly as if they were directly connected to a central station and can, of course, register or report configuration changes.
Protection
Every ECoSBoost complies with the relevant safety and operation requirements for model railways: the rail output is protected against overloading and short circuits. ECoSBoost can of course distinguish between a real short circuit and a temporary current draw when crossing points or openings occur. Like our mobile decoders, we place a high value on the robustness of the device.
Future ready
The control software of every component in an integrated ECoSBoost microcontroller can, if necessary, be updated and extended with additional features. The required upgrade is automatically performed by the ECoS central station if needed. You don’t have to do anything! Thus your ECoSBoost is literally always up-to-date!
