Description from the seller
LEPTOCERATOPS GRACILIS – FOSSIL TOOTH
For sale: an authentic fossil tooth attributed to Leptoceratops gracilis, a small herbivorous ceratopsian from the Late Cretaceous of North America.
Leptoceratops gracilis was a relatively small, hornless ceratopsian that lived about 66–69 million years ago. It inhabited the area now known as the western United States and shared ecosystems with well-known dinosaurs such as Tyrannosaurus rex and Triceratops.
SPECIMEN INFORMATION
• Species: Leptoceratops gracilis
• Type: Fossil tooth
• Formation: Lance Formation
• Locality: Niobrara County, Wyoming, USA
• Period: Late Cretaceous
• Age: Approximately 66–69 million years
The specimen is a small fossil tooth with a striking dark mineralization and clearly visible surface texture. Because of its compact size, it is an interesting and easy-to-display fossil for collectors.
Leptoceratops belonged to the Ceratopsia, the group that also includes the famous Triceratops. In contrast to the large horned ceratopsians, Leptoceratops was a much smaller and more primitive representative of this group.
The Lance Formation of Wyoming is one of the major fossil-bearing formations from the very end of the Cretaceous. The formation has yielded a great diversity of dinosaurs and offers a fascinating insight into the ecosystems that existed just before the mass extinction at the end of the Cretaceous.
A BEAUTIFUL SPECIMEN FOR COLLECTORS
Fossil teeth from small ornithischian dinosaurs are interesting additions to a dinosaur collection, especially due to their smaller size and the diversity of species they can represent.
This specimen would fit nicely in a collection focused on ceratopsians, ornithischians, Wyoming dinosaurs, or Late Cretaceous fossils.
INFORMATION CARD INCLUDED
The fossil is delivered in a protective case and with a professional information card, as visible in the photos. It lists the scientific name, fossil type, geologic period, formation, and locality.
A beautiful piece of natural history from the Late Cretaceous of Wyoming, USA.
Locality: Niobrara County, Wyoming, USA
Formation: Lance Formation
Period: Late Cretaceous
Taxonomic identification: Leptoceratops gracilis
