Ottmar Heinrich Meder Opernglas signed, tested and functional, in very good condition.

AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

The tubes, eyepieces, and the adjusting wheel are made of bone or celluloid (or an early plastic imitation like celluloid), housed in gilded brass. The characteristic fine lines (“Schreger lines”) in the material point to real bone. Very beautiful cream color.
Mechanism: It features a classic center-focus mechanism via a central wheel, very smooth to operate!
Condition: On both eyepieces there is a minimal crack in the material, which is extremely common in these organic materials due to aging and drying, but it has no effect on function. The gilded brass shows little patina. Additionally, the bridges have been finished with black piano lacquer.
The oculars are completely free of mold and dust and offer an excellent view/magnification considering their age!
Manufacturer: O. H. Meder, Leipzig. Circa 1890.

Fully functional!
Focusing via the central wheel is flawless and smooth.

Height: 10 cm - Width: 11 cm - Bottom diameter: 4.5 cm - approximate dimensions
Dimensions refer to extended glass!

Includes original leather case with antique patina silk and a brass/brass-clasp closure.
Good condition and the closure in order!

A fairly large and heavy theater glass—more suitable for gentlemen! Recommended

Historical milestones
Foundation: The company O. H. Meder was entered into the Leipzig commercial register on July 15, 1885.
Founder & owner: Ottomar Heinrich Gottfried Meder and, from July 1885, the optician Emil Bruno Meder as co-owner.

Locations in Leipzig:
The storefront was located, among others, at Markt 11 (ground floor in Aeckerleins Hof).
Products: The historic company was known above all for antique theater glasses (opera glasses), lorgnettes, spectacles, and optical devices around 1900, which are valued by collectors. The company no longer exists today.

A rarity for enthusiastic collectors!
