Description from the seller
Walther & Söhne - Plate - Sepia Oralit cloud glass, model 'Donau' in Art Deco • Germany • ca. 1932–1939
Walther-schaal 'Donau' in sepia Oralit cloud glass, with sepia-brown clouds that drift through the light glass. The top is smooth and glossy, the underside satinized, and that contrast lets the light play in the clouds. At 29 centimeters this is a large Art Deco plate, a light surface on the table when empty. Walther released the model in 1932.
For this object there is also a Buy It Now price set, for those who want to acquire it directly without waiting.
Description:
A wide, shallow dish of 29 centimeter diameter and 3.5 centimeter height. Radial panels run from the rim to a flat central disk. The clouds lie like veils in the glass, close to the edge, paler in the center. Under the dish is a stepped foot ring around a flat base. The glass is pressed: 993 grams means a wall of just over five millimeters. In Walther's prospectus of 1932 this model is called Teller Donau, number 31448.
About the maker:
Karl Gottlieb Walther founded in 1865 in Ottendorf-Okrilla in Saxony a glass factory with Bohemian glassmakers, initially for lamp glass, bottles and drinking glasses. In 1888 August Walther took over the factory as August Walther & Söhne and began with pressed glass on American machines. In 1932 the company released Oralit, agate-like art glass in brown and violet, after the example of Davidson's cloud glass.
In the interior:
Fits in an Art Deco, vintage or eclectic interior, on a sideboard or dining table. In daylight it colors warm, under a spotlight the clouds light up.
Condition:
Good, with signs of use. Rim: no chips or cracks observed. Top and central disk: fine scratches and light dust specks. Underside: satinized, as intended. The clouds and small air bubbles are production features. See the images. Offered as a decorative object, not intended for use with food.
