African Art for New Collectors

The boxes used to store gold powder come in two types: those made of bronze, rectangular or square, with lids surmounted by geometric symbols and by zoomorphic or anthropomorphic subjects, which are named koudouo. Cast using the lost-wax process, their lid could sometimes serve as a weight. The other type of box, named abampouroua, corresponds to oval boxes made of hammered and riveted brass sheets, bearing motifs engraved with a burin. According to G. Niangoura-Bouah's work "The Akan Universe of Weights for Weighing Gold". The Nonfigurative Weights Vol I, page 88.

This rectangular koudouo box is equipped with a lid surmounted by a crocodile.
Sometimes these lids could serve as weights for weighing the gold powder.

Les Poids Non figuratifs Vol I, page 88.
