Esterno del Museo Vaticano, veduto fuori di Porta Angelica is an etching by Angelo Uggeri (1754–1837) depicting the exterior of the Vatican Museums in Rome, Italy, with the work measuring 150 by 200 mm in non‑ coloured print.
Description from the seller
Refined and very rare perspectival view of the vanished Rome, focused on the area adjacent to the papal complexes. The scene captures the exterior of the Vatican Museums as observed from the external viewpoint at Porta Angelica (the historic gate of the Leonine Walls demolished in 1888).
In the foreground emerges a monumental rusticated portal bearing the inscription "SCIPIO PEROTTVS". The composition is animated by tree backdrops and by figures in period clothing arranged along the path, elements typical of the Roman veduta taste aimed at imparting proportion and liveliness to the architectural scene.
Iscrizioni e Firme (present on the sheet)
• In basso a sinistra (nella composizione): "A. Uggeri dis." (Attributed to the draughtsman and architect Angelo Uggeri, 1754–1837, known for his collections of views of the antiquities of Rome and surroundings).
