Doosje Marukai Trading Co Muziekinstrumentje Sankyo - Music boxes 2 x Dancing Clowns (Pierrot) and 1 x hula-hoop dancer - Wind-up tin toy - 1970-1979 - Japan

These are three very desirable vintage mechanical Japanese music boxes from the 1970s, in excellent cosmetic and working condition (See the photos). They were often also used as jewelry boxes with velvet inlay.
The boxes operate with a winding mechanism on the back. Once you open the bottom drawer, the music starts to play, and the figurine inside the diorama mechanically moves. The two clowns were designed by the renowned Japanese artist Koji Murai, who became famous for his unique theatrical clowns and circus artworks. See also the Koji Murai clown museum.
The hula dancer is quite rare and not often available at auctions or other sales.
The music boxes were produced by, among others, the manufacturer Marukai Trading Co.
The music from the boxes is of high quality from brands such as Sankyo.
