Two solid iron cannonballs for a hand cannon or small table/admiral's cannon from the 16th to 18th century, diameter about 32–33 mm, weight about 117–120 g, authentic/original, Post‑medieval culture, from a private collection in the Netherlands and found in the Maas river, not conserved.
Description from the seller
These are two massive iron solid cannon projectiles (cannonballs) with a diameter of 32 mm, intended for a historical hand cannon or a small tabletop/admiral cannon from the 16th to 18th centuries.
Characteristics of the item
Dimensions: diameter (L) 3.2 cm / (R) 3.3 cm
Weight: (L) 117.45 grams / (R) 119.68 grams
Find location: dredger find in the river Maas in the 1960s
Condition: unrestored
Such small, solid balls (often referred to as larger caliber kartetskogels or shots for hand cannons/walbus) typically weigh between 110 and 130 grams at this diameter (depending on the exact iron or lead alloy). They were used by the nobility and burghers for private defense of estates and fortified houses.
Solid cast iron cannon balls (also known as full balls) contain no gunpowder or ignition and are essentially harmless in principle, because they cannot explode. They operated purely on kinetic energy (impact force).
