Antique French tin wine cruet dating to the 19th century, made of tin and styled in an antique design, measuring about 32 cm high and showing wear consistent with age.
Description from the seller
Antique French tin pewter wine flagon / ferrière with mask, chain and stopper – marked BDS with fleur-de-lis – 19th century
Description
The flagon features a characteristic bulbous body with a tall cylindrical neck and a heavy curved handle. Very fine is the lower attachment of the handle, executed as a plastically formed mask/mask portrait.
The flagon is complete with the accompanying cylindrical tin stopper, which is connected to the flagon by a heavy chain. Both the chain and the fittings show signs of aging and use that suit the character of the object.
On the body there is a clearly struck tinmark with the letters “BDS” and a fleur-de-lis. The exact tin founder behind this mark has not yet been identified with certainty. The shape and workmanship indicate French production, possibly from the South or Southwest of France.
The surface has a beautiful, naturally developed dark patina. The handcrafted nature is visible in, among other things, the finish of the neck, joins, grip, and additional decoration.
Dimensions and weight: total height approximately 32 cm; weight approximately 1,648 grams.
The flagon is in a beautiful, authentically antique-looking condition with the usual signs of use, oxidation, and age. See the close-up photos for the condition; these form an important part of the description.
A decorative and collectible example of historic European pewter work, especially attractive due to the combination of the mask, the BDS/fleur-de-lis mark, and the still-present stopper with chain.
Provenance: France, probably Southern/Southwestern France
Material: tin
Height: ~32 cm
Weight: ~1,648 g
Mark: BDS with fleur-de-lis
Condition: good antique condition with appropriate signs of age and use.
