Description from the seller

Assumption of the Virgin Mary – Important Italian nineteenth-century bas-relief in sea foam – Contemporary frame and blown glass

Remarkable devotional bas-relief from the nineteenth century, of Italian manufacture, realized in finely worked sea foam and depicting the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, a composition of great elegance and notable execution quality.

The Virgin is depicted in the act of ascending to heaven, accompanied by four angelic figures gently supporting her body, in a harmonious upward motion. At the top of the composition, a bright star radiates its rays onto the Madonna, while at the bottom there is a suggestive architectural landscape.

The work stands out for the extraordinary richness of the details and for the delicacy of the relief work, particularly evident in the anatomical rendering of the figures, the expressiveness of the faces, and the masterful treatment of the drapery, characterized by deep, soft, and realistic folds.

Of particular merit are the hands and feet, whose fingers are modelled individually with extreme precision, revealing remarkable plastic sensitivity and exceptional attention to details. The hairstyles of the angels, the features of the faces, and the delicate movements of the robes also testify to the great skill of the artisan.

The composition presents a surprising three-dimensional effect, accentuated by the different depth levels of the relief, which give the figures extraordinary liveliness and lightness.

The artefact preserves a splendid antique patina, with delicate ivory tones, with natural nuances developed over time that further enhance its charm and authenticity.

Particularly important is the presence of the oval frame, contemporaneous, in ebonized wood, with refined molding, complete with its original blown bubble glass of the period. The whole constitutes a testimony of great charm of nineteenth-century devotional artistic production.

Overall dimensions: 40 × 31 × 6 cm.

Period: XIX century.

Provenance: Italian manufacture.

Material: Finely worked bas-relief sea foam.

Conservation: Excellent state of preservation, with splendid antique patina, contemporaneous frame and original blown glass. Slight traces of time compatible with the era.

A work of considerable scenic presence, capable of combining artistic refinement, spiritual depth, and extraordinary execution mastery, particularly suitable for collections of sacred art, nineteenth-century sculpture, and precious devotional objects.

The photographs are an integral part of the description and allow appreciation of the exceptional quality of the details and the state of conservation.
