Description from the seller

Lot of 4 ancient devotional cartouches from the 17th century – Carved, gilded, and polychrome wood – Latin inscriptions – Hand-forged iron nails

Fascinating and rare set of four ancient devotional cartouches dating to the 17th century, made of carved, shaped, and polychrome wood, testimony to the artistic and religious tradition of the Baroque era.

The lot comprises three cartouches with devotional Latin inscriptions and a INRI cartouche, characterized by splendid antique gilding and a suggestive craquelure of the painted surface.

Particularly interesting are the inscriptions preserved:

- ORATE PRO INFIRMO – Invocation to prayer for the sick.
- Two side cartouches with the inscriptions ORATIO and DEUS REFUGIUM, expressions of Christian spirituality, referring to prayer and to God as refuge and protection.
- INRI – Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, traditional inscription placed on Christ's cross.

The cartouches feature the characteristic sinuous ribbon shape with rolled ends, typical of the Baroque decorative repertoire.

Of special charm is the presence of the old hand-forged iron nails, still preserved on some elements, testimony to the original fastening methods.

The surfaces show a magnificent patina of time, with traces of polychromy, antique gilding, craquelure, wear, and surface sedimentations that give the whole an authentic character with great historical allure.

Dimensions:

- Cartouche ORATE PRO INFIRMO: 22 × 8 × 2.5 cm. Nail length 6 cm.
- Pair of cartouches ORATIO / DEUS REFUGIUM: 21.5 × 9 × 2 cm each, right and left arrangement.
- INRI cartouche in gilded wood: 16 × 9 × 2 cm.

Conservation status consistent with the antiquity of the objects, with wear, gaps in polychromy and gilding, small losses and natural signs of time, as detailed by the accompanying photographs.

A set of particular interest for collectors of sacred art, religious antiques, and ancient devotional artifacts, appreciable for the variety of inscriptions, artisanal workmanship, and the extraordinary expressiveness of the ancient surfaces.

The photographs are an integral part of the description.

Shipping with professional, careful packaging, carried out according to the procedures for handling and protecting works of art, thanks to our specialist Art Logistics certification.
