AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Exceptional museum-quality Villeroy & Boch Mettlach exhibition and presentation dispenser vessel, dating to the firm’s formative and award-winning production period of approximately 1844–1860. Crafted in salt-glazed stoneware with richly applied cream-colored relief decoration and metallic lustre highlights, this exceptional survivor retains its sculptural lion-head dispensing assembly, original lower spigot, and heraldic medallion bearing the intertwined VB monogram with commemorative dates 1822–1844.

The attribution to the important early Villeroy & Boch Mettlach period (circa 1844–1860) is supported by the applied commemorative heraldic medallion itself. The intertwined VB monogram, Prussian heraldic imagery, and the commemorative dates 1822–1844 are associated with the firm’s formative exhibition and award-winning period. Had this vessel been produced during the later nineteenth century, the commemorative program would be expected to reference Villeroy & Boch’s subsequent major international exhibition successes, including Paris, Vienna, and Chicago, rather than retaining the earlier 1822–1844 award references. This commemorative relief tradition predates the standardized impressed and stamped factory marks that later became characteristic of Villeroy & Boch production.

The vessel represents an outstanding example of early Villeroy & Boch craftsmanship and German Historismus with Neo-Renaissance influences. The applied relief decoration was individually molded and hand-applied prior to firing, reflecting the highly skilled artisanal production methods employed by the Mettlach workshops. A hand-incised workshop mark, tentatively read as “I.R.” or “J.R.”, is present and likely represents a workshop artisan or quality control mark.

The original sculptural lion-head dispensing assembly and lower spigot remain present. The upper metal assembly can still be unscrewed, and the original dispensing components survive. Due to the age and historical significance of the piece, it is offered as an exceptional collector’s and display object rather than for contemporary functional use. The original metalwork retains an attractive and authentic historic patina.

Examples of this scale, preservation, and historical importance rarely appear on the open market.

Dimensions: H 45 cm × W 12 cm × D 12 cm. Weight: 3.98 kg.

Condition: Good antique condition with wear consistent with age and use. The applied relief decoration remains well preserved with minor age-related wear. The original lion-head assembly and lower spigot retain their authentic historic patina. Please refer to all photographs, which form an integral part of the condition report.

Seller's Story

I curate exceptional antique and vintage decorative objects, selecting pieces for their craftsmanship, character, visual impact, and historical interest. My interests span decorative arts from the 19th century through the late 20th century and include lighting, ceramics, stone objects, decorative accessories, and unusual collector’s pieces sourced throughout Europe and beyond. Rather than focusing on a single style, period, or material, I seek out objects with strong presence, distinctive design, and a compelling story. Each piece is individually sourced, researched, and carefully evaluated for quality, authenticity, and condition. All objects are professionally packed and shipped with great care and attention to detail.
