Netherlands, Holland Dubbele wapenstuiver 1778 (No reserve price)

Holland – Double Wapenstuiver 1778 | Special Incuse Strike

Northern Netherlands – Republic of the Seven United Netherlands (1581–1795)

Very special silver specimen of the provincial double wapenstuiver from 1778, minted for the province of Holland.

This coin stands out for a remarkable incuse strike (depressed impression), in which parts of the coin’s design appear in mirror image and recessed. A fascinating deviation that arose during the minting process and gives this specimen a wholly own numismatic character.

In the close-up photos the distinctive strike deviation is clearly observable. Precisely such irregularities make historical coins interesting: they offer a tangible glimpse into eighteenth‑century coin production, in which the manufacture was still largely mechanical and artisanal.

The specimen has an attractive silver‑gray patina, with nicely contrasting relief areas. The crowned Dutch provincial arms with the leaping (rampant) lion comes out particularly well.

Obverse:
The inscription HOLLANDIA, spread over three lines, with the year 1778 beneath it.

Reverse:
The crowned provincial arms of Holland with the rampant lion, flanked by the split denomination marking 2 – S (2 stuivers).

An exceptionally interesting coin for the specialist collector. Not only because of the historical Dutch minting, but especially due to the striking incuse strike that distinguishes this specimen from the regular issues.

A characterful coin where it is precisely the deviation that forms the special collector’s value.
