AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Circa 1900 – Verrerie Legras & Cie, Saint-Denis, France.

Magnificent antique vase in blown glass signed LEGRAS, remarkable for its elegant silhouette slightly flared at the hexagonal neck and above all for its wonderful lakeside décor, entirely hand-painted and enameled, evoking the poetry of a peaceful autumn landscape by the water.

On a delicate opacified glass background in soft ivory, cream and amber-yellow hues, unfolds a charming romantic landscape of remarkable finesse and pictorial sensitivity.

In the foreground, a majestic tree with long, delicately tapered branches seems to lean toward the tranquil waters of a lake.

Its foliage, already thinned by the first frosts of autumn, reveals a multitude of fine shoots, intensified with small touches of russet and orange, like golden leaves that the wind is about to carry away.

At its feet, a bank in ochre, brown and light green tones gradually descends toward the water, while on the horizon the hazy silhouettes of wooded hills emerge, wrapped in a light mist.

But it is at the water’s edge that the poetry of this charming scene fully reveals itself. A small boat with orange reflections rests peacefully near the shore. On board, a human figure seems to contemplate the vast, silent expanse of the lake, adding a touch of life and surprising depth to the composition.

A few birds, sketched with a simple line in the sky, complete this scene imbued with calm and serenity. The fineness of the enameling work is particularly captivating: the branches are drawn with great delicacy, the foliage treated with small Impressionistic touches, while the banks and hills subtly merge with the natural tones of the glass.

As you turn the vase, the landscape extends and transforms, revealing the curves of the shore, distant hills and the last autumn leaves.

Light also plays an essential role in the beauty of this glassware. Under natural light, the ivory and amber nuances give the landscape a soft and slightly misty atmosphere. But when lit from behind, as the photographs show, the glass glows with beautiful golden reflections, giving the impression that the setting sun is set to blaze the waters of the lake.

This decor admirably illustrates the sensibility of François-Théodore Legras, deeply attached to the landscapes of his Vosges childhood, and whose naturalist creations bear witness to a true love for forests, rivers and the silent beauties of nature.

Signed “Legras” in enamel in the scene.

Beautiful height of 225 mm with a generous volume.

More than a simple decorative object, this vase is a genuine little landscape painting on glass, where every detail seems to tell a suspended moment: a still boat, a few birds in the sky, the last autumn leaves and the silence of a lake at dusk.

A superb Belle Époque creation, full of charm, gentleness and poetry, which testifies to the know-how of master glassmakers and enamel painters of the Legras house.

Rare proof of the famous model “Toul”, perfectly authenticated and illustrated in the renowned Raisonné Catalogue "Legras Maître Verrier".

In very good condition for its great age — more than 125 years! — with a particularly fresh décor and magnificent warm colors, blending in superb harmony of autumnal and twilight tones.

A very beautiful collection piece signed LEGRAS, as appealing for the delicacy of its décor as for the richness of its nuances and its romantic atmosphere.

Magnificent proof that is sure to bring into your interior all the poetry and elegance of French Art Glass from the early 20th century and will adorn a living space and evoke the admiration of lovers of French Art Nouveau glass from the Nancy school. Daum Nancy era, Gallé, Le verre Français, Schneider, Lalique...
