Description from the seller

An Arm of Power

Although its shape was inspired by functional combat weapons or felling axes, the Kilonda axe was exclusively an emblem of prestige and ceremonial display.

Royal and political power: Carried by the chiefs (Sultani) or high-ranking dignitaries during grand ceremonies or parades, it affirmed their authority. The axe embodied the leader's ability to manifest his will and to utter sharp words, “that bite or cut.”

• Transformation control: In this region, mastery of metallurgy (iron and copper working) bore a strong sacred and supernatural dimension. Owning such an object recalled the chief's bond with founding cultural heroes, credited with inventing the forge, thus symbolizing his domination over mineral resources and the creator power.
• Medium of exchange: Due to the technical complexity required to manufacture it, it also served as a high-value currency for paying royal marriage dowries or for forging peace alliances between different chiefdoms.
