Description from the seller
Overijssel – Duit 1608 – Very scarce – With tulip wreath
A very scarce duit from 1608, struck under mint master Hendrik Weijntges. This early type from Overijssel is distinguished by its characteristic tulip wreath, a particularly decorative element within the provincial coinage of the early 17th century.
Obverse:
A graceful tulip wreath with, distributed over three lines, the inscription TRANS ISVLA NIA (or variant), referencing Overijssel.
Reverse:
The crowned provincial arms of Overijssel with a rising lion and behind it a wavy line, symbolizing the IJssel River. The shield is set in a worked surround and is encircled by the distinctive tulip wreath.
Mint master: Hendrik Weijntges.
Mint master marks: Rosette, lion or munthook, with the munthook very rarely appearing on these duits.
A particularly attractive and very scarce early provincial coin type, with a distinctive design that vividly reflects the historical coinage of Overijssel.
