German-made 1950s design Scandinavian-style night valet stool, model “Stummer Diener,” with a chromed telescopic mechanism that unfolds to reveal a built-in hanger and trouser/cravat press, featuring a white lacquered geometric base, burgundy fabric seating, and a yellow felt lining, in excellent condition with only minor wear on the base.
Description from the seller
Exceptional and unusual convertible stool into a night valet (men's model called “Stummer Diener” or silent valet), German-made in the 1950s/1960s.
This piece with ingenious design hides under its seat a telescopic mechanism in chromed metal that unfolds to reveal an integrated hanger (for jackets and shirts) as well as a trouser press/neck-tie rack.
The piece proudly carries its original advertising label perfectly preserved: “modern - praktisch - ideal | ER das ist der Hocker für den Herrn” (HE - this is the stool for monsieur), adding undeniable graphic and historical charm.
The aesthetics play on superb contrasts typical of the era: a white lacquered geometric base, an outer burgundy textured fabric seat, and an interior entirely lined with the original bright yellow felt, designed to protect delicate clothing. A highly decorative, functional, and very rare collectible in this condition.
Features and dimensions:
• Era: 1950s / 1960s
• Origin: Germany (Brevet DBPa / DBGM inscribed on the label)
• Dimensions: Width 49 cm × Depth 49 cm × Height 45 cm
• Materials: White-lacquered metal/wood pedestal, burgundy fabric seat, yellow felt interior, metal mechanism.
Condition:
Excellent overall condition. The burgundy seat fabric is impeccably preserved (no tears or stains). The metal mechanism operates perfectly and deploys smoothly. The yellow interior felt is clean and bright. Only minimal paint loss/scratches on the white pedestal are noted (visible in close-up photos), quite normal for furniture of this age and in no way affecting its stability or aesthetics.
