A post-medieval lead striking plate dating to the 16th–17th century, 40 × 6 mm and 65.54 g, with floral motif impressions and used as a backing when stamping patterns in leather or textiles.
Description from the seller
This object is a 16th/17th century lead strike plate (often also called a lead stamp plate). This round lead disk was used as a backing or 'buffer' when punching, stamping, or driving patterns into softer materials, such as leather or textiles. A stamp plate was used, among other things, in leather and textile processing.
Dimensions: 40 x 6 mm
Weight: 65.54 g
Condition: intact
Material: Lead was chosen specifically because it is a soft, malleable yet heavy metal. When one struck a piece of leather with a steel punch or stamp, the lead absorbed the blow without damaging the steel tool.
Patterns: The surface shows the typical, impressed marks of this use. In this particular case you can see repeated, overlapping impressions of a floral motif (rosette punch or five-petaled flower). Each time the craftsman punched a flower shape, the stamp left a permanent imprint in the lead substrate.
Shipping method: this lot is excellently packed and shipped via DHL or UPS through Catawiki's smart shipping
