Eight-piece silver sewing set dating to circa 1870–1880, in a cobalt blue velvet and grey silk-lined case, of .925 silver manufactured in the Netherlands (likely Schoonhoven) by DUTCH ANTIQUE, including a needle case, stiletto in a separate sheath, bodkin, two thread winders, a pincushion and a wax container, weighing 127 g in total with tools weighing 40.3 g.
Description from the seller
EIGHT PIECE SILVER SEWING SET with an unusual assortment of hand-work tools in original case. Includes a needle case, stiletto in separate sheath, bodkin, two thread winders, a pincushion and a container for wax. The eight tools are contained in a blue velvet and silk-lined case. This set was made in the Netherlands, probably in Schoonhoven. around 1870-1880. All pieces are marked with a Dutch assay mark used between 1814 and 1905. Some pieces are also marked with an (unclear) maker's mark, therefore not identified.
Thread winders are a very collectable item as there were very few made, and mostly only included in a sewing set as this. The red velvet pincushion is mounted between two silver discs as is also the wax-holder. In times gone-by, when thread was coarser than we are used to today, the thread would be run through the wax to make it supple. Very unusual to find the wax-block in this set - unused!
The tools in this sewing set are unused and in IMPECCABLE CONDITION.
The case is covered in cobalt blue velvet and lined with gray velvet and silk.
The "silver" hinges are in new condition but do not completely close.
The silver tools weigh 40.3 grams (including pincushion and wax-block).
A quality sewing set and a talking-piece for a serious collector.
Careful packaging will ensure a safe delivery. See my feedback on Catawiki.
