Brass hand-held night candlestick dating from circa 1850–1900 of traditional 19th‑century European design; dimensions 5 cm high, 10 cm wide, 10 cm deep, weight 206 g, origin Europe, condition fairly good with possible minor wear.
Description from the seller
Hand-held candlestick (often called martinet or night candlestick) in brass.
This type of candlestick was traditionally used to move around the house at night (hence the handle to carry it easily without burning oneself).
The wide cup at the base allows melted wax to be collected to avoid damaging furniture or the floor. Made in cast brass, with an age- and use-related patina.
This hand candlestick (often called martinet or binet) in brass (or bronze) adopts a traditional style that was very popular from the 19th century to the early 20th century (around 1850–1930).
Characteristics and dating
Style and form: The wide cup with a curved handle (sometimes featuring a thumb rest) is the classic shape of night-time or bedside candlesticks used in the 19th century to move about in the dark.
Manufacture: This type of object was produced in very large quantities in the 19th century (Napoleon III period, Restoration/Louis-Philippe style) as well as in the early 20th century.
