Description from the seller

Groot Ethiopian-Orthodox 'Wunderkammer' style panel on hardwood - The martyrdom of the Prophet Isaiah - 37 cm.

A fascinating and macabre devotional object, excellently suited within the tradition of a cabinet of curiosities or 'Wunderkammer'. This large, heavy wooden panel shows a rare and impressive Ethiopian-Orthodox iconography: the gruesome martyrdom of the prophet Isaiah (Isaias). According to the apocryphal tradition, the prophet was sawn in two alive by the wicked king Manasseh with a wooden saw.
The composition presents the saint in a praying orans pose, flanked by two executioners in traditional robes who pull a large toothed two-person hand saw through his chest. The upper part is decorated with the geometrical interlaced bands (Harag) characteristic of this art style. The panel, with its weathered surface, conveys an extremely mystical, primitive appearance and makes for an absolute focal point in any eclectic interior or cabinet of curiosities collection.

Technical specifications:
• Object: Handcrafted and patinated devotional panel / replica.
• Theme: The martyrdom of the Prophet Isaiah (Ethiopian hagiography).
• Material: Thick, heavy native hardwood with gesso ground (chalk underlayer) and pigments.
• Dimensions: 37.0 x 27.0 x 2.5 cm.
• Provenance: Inspired by traditional Ethiopian monastic art.
• Style: Primitive art / Ethnographic / Wunderkammer.

In a very atmospheric, deliberately aged vintage state. The heavy wooden panel shows around the edges and at the bottom a beautifully worn character with historical woodworm holes and wear that evoke the impression of an object centuries old (the woodworm is completely inactive). The back reveals the coarse, artisanal structure of the woodwork. The image itself is clear, with a light patina. See the extensive photo series for further description and details and an accurate personal impression of this unique curiosity object.
