Description from the seller

Yashica Electro 35 GT Black Rangefinder – 45mm f/1.7 – Bill Zygmant Provenance

Description

A Yashica Electro 35 GT, black finish, fitted with its original Color-Yashinon DX 45mm f/1.7 lens, and accompanied by its original Yashica ever-ready case.

Serial number: 20552040. Made in Japan.

Direct provenance – Bill Zygmant

This specific camera was personally given to me directly by the British photographer Bill Zygmant.

It is one of the cameras he used when working out on the street.

This camera dates from the period when Bill Zygmant was working as a freelance press and entertainment photographer in London, photographing major musicians and celebrities for newspapers and magazines. Bill’s work during this era included The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, the Bee Gees, Status Quo and many other major figures of the period.

Photographs of myself with Bill Zygmant will be included with the auction as additional supporting provenance.

About the camera

The Electro 35 GT is one of Yashica’s classic 35mm rangefinder cameras of the late 1960s/early 1970s.

It was particularly well suited to working photographers and street photography because of its compact rangefinder design, relatively quiet leaf shutter, fast 45mm f/1.7 lens and aperture-priority automatic exposure.

The photographer selects the aperture while the electronic exposure system automatically controls the shutter speed. The built-in meter also provides SLOW and OVER warning indicators.

The fast f/1.7 lens is particularly useful for available-light photography, while the 45mm focal length provides a natural perspective well suited to photographing people and everyday scenes.

These characteristics explain why a camera such as this was practical to carry and use out on the street, rather than being primarily a studio camera.
