Frame - Wood - Gilt pierced lozenges

Hand-carved and gilded wooden frame, pierced throughout with lozenges and scrolling volutes. Italy, circa 1930. MADE IN ITALY.

The whole outer band is carved a giorno - cut right through the wood - so this is not a flat moulding but a true openwork lace of volutes and lozenges that lets the wall show through. It is chisel work, done by hand one cut at a time: look closely at the photos and you will see that no two scrolls are quite the same.

The gilding has the warm, slightly coppery tone of old gold, with the natural wear on the high points where the relief catches the light and the hand. A small frame, but a precious one, that turns any image into something important.

Perfect for a miniature, a devotional painting, an etching, a photograph or a little mirror, and beautiful even left empty, hung on its own or in a group on the wall.
