Two hand-carved Shona green serpentine busts from Zimbabwe, depicting village elders, dating from ca. 1980–present, with a total weight of 2.5 kg and heights of about 15 cm and 13 cm, in excellent original condition.
Description from the seller
Two hand-carved Shona stone busts - Green Serpentine - Zimbabwe - 2nd half of the 20th century
Object description:
Beautiful, handmade set of two African busts (village elders—grandfather and grandmother), crafted by a Shona artist from Zimbabwe. The sculptures are expertly hand-carved from solid green serpentine stone (serpentine).
A hallmark of these contemporary Shona works is the stunning play of textures: the faces and necks are fully smooth-ground and polished to a high gloss, allowing the deep green tones and natural veining in the stone to come beautifully to the fore. This forms a strong contrast with the rough, chiseled texture of the hair and beards.
The sculptures are in excellent, undamaged condition and form a harmonious duo.
