AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Beautiful and monumental antique ceramic vase, manufactured by the renowned producer Villeroy & Boch in the factory at Mettlach, Germany, during the heyday of the Jugendstil / Art Nouveau period (circa 1900–1910).

This is a documented vase with model number 2979. The vase features an elegant, slim, tapering form with a beautifully stylized, incised/engraved decoration of hanging bellflowers at the top, combined with clean geometric panels at the base. Executed in a characteristic palette of terracotta red, cream white, olive green, and black accents.

The base is fully and sharply marked with the iconic Mettlach 'Abbey mark' (castle stamp) with the letters VB, the model number '2979' and the export markings "Made in Germany" and "Reg. U.S. Pat. Off.".

The vase is in a lived-in, antique condition with an old restoration. On the exterior there is a distinct vertical hairline crack running through one of the cream panels (see photos). On the interior, this crack has historically been stabilized with an old glue/resin layer to prevent further movement. The vase is structurally solid but should be used only dry (as a decorative or restoration object).
