Description
An original ink and watercolour illustration by acclaimed Belgian graphic novelist and illustrator Judith Vanistendael, created for the publication Ik ga naar China en ik neem mee….
Vanistendael is one of Belgium's internationally recognised contemporary comic artists, celebrated for her expressive drawing style, sensitive storytelling and distinctive use of watercolour.
Her graphic novels, including De maagd en de neger (Dance by the Light of the Moon), Toen David zijn stem verloor (When David Lost His Voice) and Penelope, have earned her considerable recognition in the European graphic novel scene.
The Artwork
This delightful composition, entitled Chinese Zodiac, features a whimsical vertical tower of animals inspired by the Chinese zodiac.
The animals are stacked one above another in a playful and precarious arrangement, creating a charming visual narrative.
At the top, a green dragon leisurely enjoys a drink while resting above a tiger. Below them, a lively collection of animals, including a horse, monkey, rooster, goat and snake, forms an amusing and imaginative composition.
Executed in delicate black ink lines and transparent watercolour washes, the illustration perfectly demonstrates Vanistendael's spontaneous, expressive and humorous drawing style.
The narrow vertical composition contrasts beautifully with the generous white margins of the sheet, giving the artwork a particularly elegant appearance.
The drawing is signed by Judith Vanistendael in pencil in the lower right corner.
