Description from the seller
Important Wooden Carved and Gilded Processional Torchère - First Half of the 19th Century (late 1800s)
• Origin: Italy (artisan manufacture of sacred furnishings)
• Material: Hand-carved softwood, preparation plaster, red bole and metal leaf gilding (matte gold / suevite) with original wrought iron fittings.
• Dimensions: Height approximately 72 cm
• State of conservation: Good structural condition for its period. It presents a beautiful and genuine patina of time with natural wear and localized losses of the gilding that reveal the red bole underneath, testifying to its authenticity. A small physiological crack in the wood of the upper platter. No recent invasive restoration.
Extended description:
Captivating and rare stem of a processional candelabrum/torchère of Italian artisanal manufacture, dating to the first half of the 19th century. The piece is entirely hand-carved in softwood, featuring a fluted shaft and decorative knobs with acanthus and stylized foliate motifs in Neoclassical / Eclectic taste.
The surface retains its exceptional period finish: the original gilding is applied over a rich layer of brown-red bole. In the recesses of the carving, the characteristic gray-green oxidation of the old metal leaf is clearly visible.
The upper end of the platter preserves the original iron fittings intact: a sturdy reinforcing bracket fixed with hand-peened nails and a loop-hanging eye (pin), historically used to secure and lock large ceremonial candles or the small pan for catching drips. The lower base features the native through-hole for the original support pin.
With its 72 cm height, the object boasts perfect proportions and great versatility, making it an ideal high-era collectible piece.
