Bronze medieval belt fitting with geometric inlay, possibly Byzantine (7th–8th century), measuring 21 × 25 × 8 mm, in good condition, originally acquired from a gallery in Spain in 1960, with two perforated lugs on the reverse for belt attachment.
Description from the seller
Period: Medieval, possibly Byzantine (7th century CE).
Material: Bronze with possible silver inlays.
Dimensions: 21 × 25 × 8 mm.
Auction description:
Interesting medieval bronze applique, with a lobed profile and elaborated geometric decoration achieved through small metallic inlays of a silvery tone.
The surface features curvilinear and dotted motifs arranged symmetrically, standing out against the metal’s dark patina. Its characteristic double rectangular opening structure allowed the passage and attachment of a strap.
A representative piece of medieval utilitarian goldsmithing, where functionality and ornamentation were combined. It preserves an attractive antique patina, with good definition of its decorative elements.
Condition: Good, with signs of use and wear typical of its possible age.
The piece has a body with slightly concave sides, ending at one end with a small triangular appendage. Its frontal surface is richly decorated with a composition of spirals, scrolls, and interlaced circular motifs, framed by two delicate lateral friezes.
The reverse is especially noteworthy, preserving two perforated loops intended for fixing the plate to the belt leather, evidence of its functional construction.
Notably, its attractive archaeological patina, with olive green tones, dark bronze and earthy golden hues that enhance the depth of the ornamental motifs.
Condition: Good apparent structural integrity, with the decorated plate and the two rear loops preserved. It shows surface wear and earthy deposits compatible with its archaeological state. It does not retain the ring or the buckle’s pin.
An attractive piece of early medieval archaeology, especially valued for the richness of its decorative motifs, the elegance of its design, and the preservation of its original attachment elements.
