Medieval belt buckle in bronze with geometric inlay, possibly Byzantine from the 7th century AD, in good condition with an archaeological patina, measuring 23 × 52 × 11 mm and acquired from a gallery in Spain in 1960.
Description from the seller
Medieval belt buckle with inlaid geometric decoration
Era: Medieval, possibly Byzantine (7th-8th centuries C.E.).
Material: Bronze with possible silver inlays.
Measurements: 21 × 25 × 8 mm.
Description for auction:
Interesting medieval belt fittings made of bronze, lobed profile and elaborated geometric decoration through small metallic inlays with a silvery hue.
The surface features curvilinear and dotted motifs arranged symmetrically, standing out against the dark patina of the metal. Its characteristic double rectangular opening structure allowed the passage and securing of a strap.
A representative piece of utilitarian medieval goldsmithing, where functionality and ornament were combined. It preserves an attractive antique patina, with good definition of its decorative elements.
Conservation state: Good, with signs of use and wear appropriate to its possible age.
The piece presents a body with slightly concave sides, terminated at one end by a small triangular protrusion. Its front surface is richly decorated with a composition of spirals, scrolls, and interlaced circular motifs, framed by two delicate lateral borders.
Special interest lies in the reverse, which retains two perforated loops intended for fastening the plate to the belt leather, testimony to its functional construction.
This type of belt fittings constitutes an interesting manifestation of late antique and early medieval metalwork, when Byzantine artistic influence spread widely across the Mediterranean.
It stands out especially for its attractive archaeological patina, with olive green, dark bronze, and earthy golden tones that enhance the depth of the ornamental motifs.
Conservation state: Apparent good structural integrity, with the decorated plate and the two rear loops preserved. It shows surface wear and earthy deposits compatible with its archaeological state. The ring and the buckle closure pin are not preserved.
An attractive piece of early medieval archaeology, especially valuable for the richness of its decorative motifs, the elegance of its design, and the preservation of its original fixing elements.
