The InterCityExperimental (also ICE/V – “V” stands for Experiment –, ICExperimental, in the planning phase also R/S-VD for Wheel/Rail Experimental and Demonstration Vehicle [5]) was an experimental train of the German Federal Railways (Deutsche Bundesbahn) for testing high-speed train services and a precursor of the current Intercity-Express (ICE) trains of Deutsche Bahn. The train was designed from late 1979 and built between 1983 and 1985. It was used for numerous technical tests until its withdrawal on 1 January 2000. The approved maximum speed of 350 km/h was higher than that of all later ICE trains and was exceeded during various demonstration and record attempts. With a top speed of 406.9 km/h, achieved during the ICE world record attempt on 1 May 1988, it was the fastest wheel-rail vehicle in the world until December 1989 and remains the world record holder for wheel-rail vehicles in Germany.
