Rare Theodor Herzl Plaquette with an 800 silver mounting, featuring a bronze medallion and Vienna interwar period craftsmanship circa 1925–1930, originating from Austria and measuring 8 by 8 cm in good antique condition with a patinated bronze and silver finish.
Description from the seller
Authentic early Zionist commemorative plaque dedicated to Dr. Theodor Herzl (1860–1904), the founder of modern political Zionism.
This high-quality collectible was produced in Vienna, Austria, during the interwar period (ca. 1925-1930) [cja.huji.ac.il]. It showcases craftsmanship in which a classical bronze medallion is combined with an officially certified Austrian silver mounting.
Materials & Hallmarks:
• The medallion: A bronze bas-relief portrait in profile of Dr. Theodor Herzl with his cast signature "Dr. Herzl". The medal retains its original, deep, dark bronze patina.
• The silver setting & frame: The bronze medal is set in a round, solid silver mounting edge stamped with "ARGENT 900" (90% silver) and a master mark. This ring is mounted in a square silver outer frame. The outer edge of this frame bears the official Austrian hallmark used since 1922: the "Wiedehopf" (hop-head) in a hexagon, next to the "800" fineness mark for 80% solid silver.
Condition:
The object is in good antique condition. The bronze bas-relief is sharp and highly detailed. The silver elements have a beautiful, authentic antique patina. The gold-colored background behind the medal shows some light signs of age and superficial flaking of the gold layer, which is entirely fitting for a age of nearly 100 years and contributes to its historical character. Provided with the original hanging loop at the top.
A special and sought-after piece of European-Jewish history (Judaica), ready for the international collector.
