Already of remarkable finesse and complexity, it will need a few more years to reach its full potential. To be enjoyed from 2025 to 2050.
About the estate
The Giovanni Battista Burlotto estate, located northwest of the Barolo vineyard area in Verduno, is a traditional Piedmont family operation. Founded in 1850 by Ignazio Burlotto, the estate later passed into the hands of his nephew, Giovan Battista Burlotto, who for almost 77 years worked to enhance the quality and reputation of its wines. From the end of the 19th century, the estate earned a solid international reputation. Giovan Battista Burlotto died in 1927 and, after a few years of lull, Fabio Alessandria, the founder’s great-grandson, together with his sister Cristina, raised the estate to its highest level. The vineyard covers 12 hectares, half of which is planted with Nebbiolo; other cultivated grape varieties are Barbera, Dolcetto, Pelaverga, Sauvignon and Freisa. The appellations represented by this estate are: Barolo, Dolcetto d'Alba, Barbera d'Alba, Langhe Freisa, Langhe Nebbiolo, Verduno Pelaverga. In the vines, the work is classic and well done; the rows are grassed and lightly cultivated; replacements of vines are carried out by massal selection. In the cellar, the work is also traditional, with destemming, foot-treading, fermentations with indigenous yeasts in old open wooden foudres; macerations are long (up to two months); the wines are neither filtered nor fined. One of the region’s benchmark estates, a safe bet.
