AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Medieval belt buckle with geometric decoration inlaid
Era: Medieval, possibly Byzantine (7th–9th centuries AD).
Material: Bronze with possible silver inlays.
Measurements: 21 × 25 × 8 mm.
Auction description:
Interesting medieval belt fitting, made of bronze, with lobed profile and elaborated geometric decoration created by small metallic inlays of a silvery hue.
The surface features curvilinear and dotted motifs arranged symmetrically, standing out against the dark patina of the metal. Its characteristic double rectangular opening allowed the passage and securing of a strap.
A representative piece of utilitarian medieval goldsmithing, where functionality and ornamentation were combined. It retains an attractive antiqued patina, with good definition of its decorative elements.
Conservation status: Good, showing signs of use and wear appropriate to its possible age.

The piece presents a body with slightly concave sides, terminated at one end by a small triangular appendage. Its frontal surface is richly decorated with a composition of spirals, scrolls, and interlaced circular motifs, framed by two delicate side borders.

Special interest is shown by the reverse, which preserves two perforated loops intended for attaching the plate to the belt leather, evidence of its functional construction.

This type of belt fittings constitutes an interesting manifestation of late antique and early medieval metalwork, when Byzantine artistic influence spread widely across the Mediterranean.

It stands out especially for its attractive archaeological patina, with olive-green, dark bronze, and earthy golden tones that enhance the depth of the ornamental motifs.

Conservation status: Good apparent structural integrity, with the decorated plate and the two rear loops preserved. It shows surface wear and earthy deposits compatible with its archaeological condition. The ring and the buckle pin are not preserved.

An attractive late antique–early medieval archaeology piece, particularly valued for the richness of its decorative motifs, the elegance of its design, and the preservation of its original fastening elements.
