Description from the seller

Mattei – Descent from the Cross after Rubens – probably meerschaum – mid-19th century

Professionally shipped – almost 1000 five-star reviews worldwide.

Oval relief with a scene of the Descent from the Cross, probably after Peter Paul Rubens. Christ is lowered from the cross with the help of a cloth, surrounded by Mary and other figures. In the foreground on the left a young woman holds the crown of thorns; at the bottom the three nails lie next to a jug. The figures and the folds of the garments are elaborately worked. Encased behind convex glass in a black frame in Napoleon III style.

With frame H 31 × W 26 cm; relief H 21 × W 16 cm. Signed “Mattei” and dated, probably 1853. In good overall condition with a few small production irregularities at the jug on the bottom left; the backing paper at the rear has been replaced.

Please view the photos carefully, they are part of the description. The first photo shows the color most accurately. Due to lighting differences, the other photos may show slight color variations.

Shipped with tracking.
