Description from the seller

Bowl with ear handles in golden lustre ware from Triana, Seville, late 15th–early 16th century, circa 1480–1520.

Important bowl of Hispano-Moorish tradition made in tin-glazed ware with copper-toned metallic lustre decoration, of circular body with two perforated side ears (ear-handles).

The interior presents a rich ornamentation distributed in concentric registers, with vegetal, geometric and pseudo-epigraphic motifs, characteristic of Seville Triana productions during the transition between the 15th and 16th centuries. Notable is the broad band of stylized calligraphic characters surrounding the central boss, still retaining a remarkable metallic sheen with a coppery and pinkish hue.

The ear handles are decorated with parallel reserve bands, while the reverse preserves broad and schematic lustre traces, forming a sober decoration with great visual impact.

Triana, Seville. ca. 1480–1520.
Tin-glazed ware decorated in metallic lustre.

Shows wear, glaze loss, abrasions, craquelure, small accretions and losses at the rim and on the ear handles, compatible with its age and archaeological character.

A piece especially attractive for its early chronology, pseudo-epigraphic decoration, ear-handle typology and preservation of the original metallic lustre, representative of the transition from medieval Hispano-Moorish ceramic tradition to Sevillian productions of the early Renaissance.
