Description from the seller
Royal blue Beijing rug – Beijing “Fine Antique”, circa 1940, wool on cotton loom - 215 x 120 cm
This sumptuous Beijing rug, handmade, embodies all the finesse and refinement of the great Chinese textile productions from the early 20th century. Fully hand-knotted according to traditional techniques, it immediately captivates with its deep royal blue, a symbol of nobility and timeless elegance. Its field is rhythmically punctuated by a delicate floral warp, offering a visual reading that is both soothing and sophisticated. The eye is naturally drawn to an exceptional central medallion, remarkable as much for its size as for its uncommon design. This bold composition gives the rug a strong and balanced presence, while preserving perfect overall harmony. The finely worked borders, with svastika (or swastika) motifs, originate from Sanskrit and mean “good fortune” or “well-being.” The motif, a hooked cross, seems to have been used in Eurasia as far back as 7,000 years ago, perhaps to represent the movement of the sun across the day. They frame the décor with precision and underscore the quality of execution. The subtle variations in wool and shading, characteristic of handmade work, affirm the authenticity of this antique piece and reinforce its unique character.
