Description from the seller

Chinese Embroidered Panel “Crane and Deer Welcoming Spring” – Early Republic Period, 1912–1928

A Chinese embroidered panel dating to the early Republic period, circa 1912–1928, featuring the traditional auspicious subject “Crane and Deer Welcoming Spring” (鹤鹿同春).

Worked on a vibrant red satin ground, the composition depicts a flying crane above a spotted deer, surrounded by scrolling foliage, flowers, peaches and lingzhi motifs. Two colourful flags appear at the lower corners, adding a distinctive period feature to the design.

The embroidery employs the traditional panjin technique, in which metallic threads are laid across the surface and secured with fine stitches. Detailed stitching defines the crane’s feathers, the deer’s coat and the surrounding foliage. Blue patterned borders and an outer decorative textile surround complete the composition.

Dimensions: 59 × 38 cm.

Condition: Age-related wear and creasing to the textile. The raised and laid threads are characteristic of the embroidery technique and are not loose or detached threads. Please examine all photographs carefully for the condition and details.
