Oil Lamp with Ribbed Body from the Late Roman/Early Byzantine period (ca 5th–8th century AD), a terracotta lamp with a ribbed upper surface, 9.4 cm high, 9.5 × 6.4 cm, weight 74.26 g, provenance Denmark/Germany and acquired from a gallery in 2026, authentic original object.
Description from the seller
Terracotta Oil Lamp with Ribbed Body – ca 5th to 8th century A.D.
A terracotta oil lamp with a low, rounded reservoir, a broad circular filling opening surrounded by a raised collar and a short projecting nozzle pierced for the wick. Repeated oblique ribs decorate the sloping upper surface, creating a shell-like arrangement around the body. The warm ochre and brown ceramic retains an uneven texture, surface deposits and abrasions, with darker areas concentrated near the nozzle. These dark patches may include traces associated with use, although their composition cannot be established from photographs. Chips and losses are visible around the nozzle and exposed edges. The lamp illustrates the combination of practical construction and moulded ornament found in ceramic lighting equipment of the Roman world.
Material: Terracotta
Dimensions: 9.5 x 6.4 cm
Weight: 74.26 gr
Provenance: Adquired in Denmark from a gallery in 2026.
We guarantee the authenticity of the pieces, backed by the combined experience of our experts spanning more than 40 years. A Certificate of Authenticity (CoA) will be sent digitally by email.
