Description from the seller

Val Saint Lambert “Marcelle” Art Deco Vase – Rare Green Luxval Demi-Crystal, Belgium, ca. 1935

No reserve price

A striking and elegant Art Deco vase by Val Saint Lambert, model “Marcelle”, produced as part of the celebrated Luxval collection, one of the most distinctive ranges of Belgian decorative glass from the 1930s.

Executed in rare green demi-crystal, the vase features a remarkable architectural silhouette, with strong geometric handles, a beautifully ribbed body and a sculptural stepped base. Its symmetrical composition and clean, powerful lines perfectly embody the bold aesthetics of the Art Deco period.

The unusual smoky green colour is particularly attractive, revealing subtle olive and grey-green tones depending on the lighting. The transparent glass and pronounced geometric relief create fascinating reflections, giving the vase an elegant and distinctly modern appearance.

The “Marcelle” model is documented in the original 1935 Val Saint Lambert Luxval catalogue, where it appears as model No. 37. This historical reference confirms the authenticity of the design and its place within Belgian Art Deco glassmaking.

The vase also bears the original moulded “VSL Belgique” signature on the underside, as illustrated in the photographs.

Preserved in exceptionally good vintage condition, the vase shows virtually no visible signs of use. Its remarkable preservation is particularly impressive considering its age of approximately 90 years.

A beautiful collector’s piece and an excellent gift for admirers of Art Deco design. With its sculptural geometry and sophisticated green colour, it would also make a striking decorative accent in a contemporary or minimalist interior.

Val Saint Lambert, nestled in Seraing near Liège, Belgium, is a beacon of crystal craftsmanship with a legacy spanning nearly two centuries. Established in 1826 by chemist François Kemlin and engineer Auguste Lelièvre, the company transformed the remnants of the Val-Saint-Lambert Abbey into a thriving glassworks.

The 19th century marked a period of significant growth for Val Saint Lambert. By the early 1900s, the company employed over 5,000 workers, producing 120,000 pieces of glass daily. Their creations, renowned for exceptional quality and intricate designs, found admirers worldwide, including in Tsarist Russia and North America. A testament to their artistry is the “Vase of the Nine Provinces,” a monumental piece over 2 meters tall and weighing 200 kilograms, crafted for the 1894 World Exhibition in Antwerp.

The 20th century brought challenges, including the impacts of two World Wars and economic downturns. Despite these obstacles, Val Saint Lambert’s resilience ensured the preservation of its artisanal heritage. Today, the company seamlessly blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design, producing exquisite crystal pieces that cater to modern aesthetics.

Val Saint Lambert stands as a symbol of Belgian craftsmanship, where each piece reflects a harmonious blend of history, artistry, and innovation.
