Tornese Trinita' Maggiore Napoli - Relief, "Velo della Veronica" - 28 cm - Pinewood - 1855

Stunning antique alto-relief depicting the Holy Face of Jesus imprinted on Veronica's veil, dating from the late 1800s (circa 1855), hailing from the rich and renowned school of southern Italy, a workshop of religious artifacts and sacred arts. Made of polychrome, stuccoed wood, hand-decorated, and in full Baroque style, it features a gilded wooden frame, richly carved with foliage and scroll motifs. Finely detailed work in color and relief motifs (see photo), the suffering face of Christ with the crown of thorns, set on a drape that simulates the veil; the white and red of the blood attest to its beauty and uniqueness. The rear structure shows a typical ancient containment frame, with black embossed fittings, symbolized by the oval label of Tornese Napoli, Trinità Maggiore 52, a noted workshop Arti di Divozione located in the historic center of Naples, specialized in the making of religious articles, sacred objects of devotion, and devotional missals.
