Description from the seller
Title: Large Antique Gilt Cast Iron Pipe Rack - Belgian Royal Coat of Arms - "L'Union fait la force" - 34 cm
Description:
For sale: a very substantial, heavy and rare antique cast-iron display pipe rack (wall pipe rack), decorated with the grand Coat of Arms of the Kingdom of Belgium.
This monumental piece of historical folk art was produced in the 19th century through a high-quality casting process. The rear shows the characteristic, rough and dark texture of authentic old cast iron. The front features the original, beautifully worn gilding/bronze painting. This gives the object a stunning, well-aged two-tone character: the deep brown-black iron in the grooves contrasts beautifully with the gold accents on the higher-lying parts.
The highly detailed design shows the central shield with the Belgian lion (Lion of Brabant), crowned with the royal crown and flanked by two upright, bearing lions. Behind the shield cross the official royal scepters. At the bottom lies the heraldic star of the Order of Leopold, flanked by an elegant ribbon with the national motto in crisp relief: "L'UNION FAIT LA FORCE" (Unity makes strength).
At the bottom there is the open-weave braiding with rings and loops, designed for the elegant hanging and display of long clay pipes.
Condition report:
The object is in excellent antique condition. Because antique cast iron is relatively brittle, these racks have often been damaged in a fall in the past. This specimen, however, is completely intact, without fractures, cracks or restorations; all vulnerable loops at the bottom are undamaged. The authentic patina and the natural wear of the gilding testify to the great age and historical integrity. The object has deliberately not been repainted or cleaned in order to preserve its unique character.
Specifications:
• Country of origin: Belgium (possibly produced in one of the renowned 19th-century foundries in the Liège or Charleroi region)
• Period: 19th century (c. 1860-1890)
• Material: Cast iron with remnants of original gilding
• Width: 34 cm
• Height: 27 cm
• Condition: Excellent, completely intact with original patina
This object is a beautiful and sought-after collectible for enthusiasts of heraldry, militaria/Belgicana, tobacciana and rare 19th-century atmospheric cast iron.
