Description from the seller
Sculpture “Putto on a Lion's Skin” in terracotta, Léon Dufrène, circa 1900 – France
Material: Terracotta
Title of the work: “Putto on a Lion's Skin”
Author: Léon Dufrène (1880–1917)
Period: Circa 1900
Country of origin: Paris, France
Good condition considering its age and use
Dimensions: 32 x 52 x 30 cm.
Exceptional terracotta sculpture, signed by the French academic sculptor Léon Dufrène (1880-1917), originally titled in French in forms such as Putto sur une peau de lion (Putto on a lion's skin) or Baby and Lion.
It depicts a male infant figure, or classical putto, seated on the lion's skin and turning to observe its open jaws. The contrast between the innocence and delicacy of the child and the brute strength of the feline stands out, as well as the texture of the animal's mane and the soft and delicate skin of the small one.
Léon Dufrène was a prominent French academic sculptor of the late 19th century. He specialized in capturing movement and anatomy in both children and animals with great sensitivity and dynamism.
This is an original terracotta model, signed by the author, a material favored by sculptors of the time before taking their pieces to foundry to make the bronze versions. At the bottom it shows that the piece is hollow, one of the distinctive features of the process when working in this material: terracotta or baked clay.
It bears the seal of the renowned Parisian foundry Susse Frères Editeurs Paris, founded in 1758, which played a decisive role in the production of high-quality bronze sculptures during the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods.
Shipping of the product will be paid by the buyer according to the dimensions, weight and destination. Shipping costs include professional custom packaging; and personalized shipping, with tracking number and warranty. DUE TO THE PIECE'S FRAGILITY, IT IS LIKELY THAT ITS SHIPMENT WILL REQUIRE A CUSTOM-MADE WOODEN BOX, WHICH WILL BE PAID BY THE BUYER.
The buyer will be responsible for paying import duties and associated taxes in the destination country, if any. Please note the seller's disclaimer regarding possible customs charges, as they are charged in the destination country and the amount to be paid is determined by that country's customs. If an export permit is required, the costs are borne by the buyer. The cost depends progressively on the value of the artwork to be exported.
