Description from the seller

Pair of large altar or liturgical chandeliers/candelabra, with nine lights, in bronze.

Each features nine lights in the bobeches, arranged in an arc or cradle. The presence of 9 lights recalls the Hanukkiah (nine-branched menorah for the Jewish festival of Hanukkah). However, the openwork tripodal base with palmette or acanthus leaf decorations and floral motifs (stylized flowers/rosettes under the curved bar) is quite typical of 19th-century church bronzes (Neo-Gothic or Neo-Baroque).

The decoration is based on foliate volutes between the stalks of the bobeches, rosettes of applique under the curved bar.

The base is a very worked open tripodal base, with scroll feet/lion’s paw and acanthus decorations, topped by a fluted baluster shaft.

These church/chapel candelabra (choir or altar candles) have been electrified, but the system has been removed to make way for the original candles.

Exceptional pieces in molded and chiseled bronze, with original gilding or gilded patina (very patinated by time). Light verdigris is noticeable in the hollows of the bobeches (natural copper oxidation contained in bronze/brass).

The style is Neo-Baroque or Neo-Renaissance (a very popular current in the 19th century, under the Second Empire or the Third Republic in France, c. 1860–1890).

With 97 cm in length, these are imposing and very spectacular pieces, often intended to furnish a large space (altar, reception sideboard, fireplace mantel).

Beautiful patina of use, gilding partially worn revealing the dark bronze at the central shaft.

Dimensions: 97 cm long
60 cm at the highest point
43 cm at the center

The base measures 28 cm on each side.
Each cup measures 7.5 cm in diameter
Interior candle diameter: 2 cm

This luxurious ensemble weighs 15 kg.
